  1. Clamwin Anti-Virus -

Clamwin, is a free Anti-Virus with free online updates. Its really simple to use, but lacks on-access scanning meaning you have to scan file manually yourself. However fear not there is an extension for Firefox that uses Clamwin to automatically scan all downloads, Clamwin Anti-Virus Glue for Firefox. Clamwin might be too simplistic for users who want the whole suite of scanning abilities.

Other free scanners are AVG Free Anti-Virus and Avira Anti-Vir PersonalEdition. I had trouble getting them both working and updating the virus definition correctly. Apparently, I am running software in conflict with them. Other users apparently have no issues and endorse them enthusiastically versus commercial alternatives.

  4. Rootkit Revealer -

Rootkits are dangerous implants on your computer that hide all sorts of malicious software. Sysinternals, developed one of the better free utilities out there to expose rootkits. As always you should scan with multiple utilities, but for the occasional scan revealer is good enough.
